The Pokhara Avengers, a franchise team in the upcoming Nepal Premier League (NPL), unveiled their official jersey in a ceremony held in Kathmandu. The event was graced by the team's mentor, South African cricket legend Jonty Rhodes, who presented the jersey alongside marquee player Kushal Bhurtel and other team members.
The jersey design draws inspiration from the majestic Himalayas, featuring elements that symbolize the region's natural beauty and the team's resilience. The unveiling was accompanied by a video showcasing the jersey against the backdrop of Mustang's Lomanthang, emphasizing the team's connection to Nepal's rich cultural and natural heritage.
Team owner Subodh Tripathi highlighted the initiative's focus on raising awareness about climate change and promoting sustainable tourism through cricket. He stated, "We aim to bring global attention to the melting Himalayas and the need for serious action against climate change."
Jonty Rhodes expressed his enthusiasm about mentoring the team, emphasizing his commitment to sharing his experience to elevate the team's performance and contribute to the growth of cricket in Nepal. He remarked, "I am excited to be part of the Pokhara Avengers and look forward to contributing to the rise of Nepalese cricket."
The event also featured the launch of the team's official anthem and a "Ride with Jonty" rally, reflecting the community's support and the growing enthusiasm for cricket in the region.
The Pokhara Avengers have assembled a diverse squad for the NPL, including international players such as American wicketkeeper-batsman Andries Gous, Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede, West Indies pacer Anderson Phillip, and English all-rounder Matt Critchley. The team is coached by Rajiv Kumar, a former assistant coach of the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
The inaugural season of the Nepal Premier League is scheduled to commence on November 30, 2024, at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. The Pokhara Avengers are set to compete against seven other franchises, with the tournament running until December 21, 2024.
